INSTRUMENT RATING COURSE

FAR Part 61 (§61.65)

Basic Requirements

  • Hold at least a current private pilot certificate
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language
  • Pass the required knowledge test on the aeronautical knowledge areas listed in §61.65(b)
  • Pass a practical test on the areas of operation listed in §61.65(c) of this part that apply to the aircraft rating sought.
  • A person applying for an instrument rating (i.e. “on the day of the checkride”) must have logged at least 50 hours of ‘cross-country’ flight time as Pilot-in-Command.

Minimum Requirements (61.65(c))

  • 40 Hours of actual or simulated “Instrument Flying Time” in Beech Sundowner @ $287/hr = $11,480 (15 of the hours must be training received from an authorized instrument instructor (CFII))
  • FAA Knowledge Test: $175
  • Study Materials: $150
  • Practical Test Fee: $500

 

Total Minimum Cost: $12,305

MINIMUM COST DETAILS

This is the absolute minimum cost, based on the FAA’s minimum requirements for an Instrument-Airplane Rating. The national average for obtaining this rating is 60 hours of flight time. This figure also assumes the applicant will complete a home-study course, as there is no ground instruction factored into this figure. Ground Instruction = $82/hr.
